B Vitamins are water-soluble and not stored in the body very effectively, therefore they need to be replenished daily. Insufficiencies may occur easily during times of dieting for weight loss, fasting or consuming the Standard American Diet (SAD), which usually includes too many processed/refined foods and excess sugar. Alcohol and drugs, including antibiotics, also deplete levels of B vitamins. The B vitamins function as co-enzymes: they assist the enzymes, our biological catalysts, in implementing the tens of thousands of biochemical reactions and metabolic pathways that make life possible. Enzymes assist energy production, conversion of carbohydrates to glucose, and the metabolism of fat and protein. B vitamins are also essential to optimal functioning of the central nervous system, and are used during physiological responses to stress and fatigue. Adequate levels of B vitamins are especially important for the formation of healthy hair and skin, and optimal functioning of the eyes and liver. The general muscle tone of the gastrointestinal tract is supported by the B vitamins, potentially promoting efficient bowel functioning. The B vitamin group includes the following: B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B12 (cyanocobalamin), biotin, folic acid, choline, inositol and PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid). Orotic acid, pangamic acid, and B17 (laetrile) are intimately involved in many of the same pathways, and are commonly regarded as quasi-B vitamins.* * These statements have not been evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug administration.
